Overview

What is Fire, Property & Home Insurance, and why does it matter?

Property insurance covers a building and, depending on the policy, its contents against fire and a range of other specified perils. It spans everything from a home policy covering a family's residence and belongings, to a Standard Fire & Special Perils policy protecting a factory, warehouse or shop, often with business-interruption cover layered on top.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Does a standard policy cover flood and earthquake?

Not always automatically — this varies by insurer and plan, and is worth confirming explicitly, particularly if your property is in an area exposed to either risk.

What's the difference between covering the building and covering its contents?

Building cover protects the structure itself; contents cover protects what's inside (furniture, stock, equipment, valuables). Many policies let you choose one, the other, or both.

Can I insure a business premises and its stock under the same policy?

Often yes, depending on the insurer and policy structure — for jewellery or high-value stock specifically, a Jewellers Block policy may be a better fit than a generic property policy.
